Root canal treatments (RCTs) are a dental procedure that restores a tooth affected by an infection of the tooth’s root. Typically, root canal infections are because of advanced tooth decay that spreads into the canal. This routine dental procedure can preserve and restore your natural tooth and prevent the need for tooth extraction.
Procedure
After numbing the area, the dentist will begin by removing all decay from the tooth. This will clear out the infected tissue in the crown of the tooth.
Then small instruments are inserted into the roots of the tooth to allow for a thorough cleaning. Dentist scrapes the diseased tissue from the root, and then thoroughly cleans and prepare the area for a root canal filling material.
Once the root canal is sealed, a filling is placed over it to restore the tooth.
FAQs
RCT is a commonly performed procedure that we can usually complete in two to three visits depending on the severity of the infection.
Contrary to popular belief, the root canal process is not painful. The pain is coming from your infection so once the infection is resolved patients typically report immediate relief.
A dental crown is often necessary after a root canal treatment, especially for back teeth like molars and premolars. A dental crown protects the tooth from fracturing after root canal treatment.
